Wat Arun

Wat ArunWat ArunWat Arun (), also known as the Temple of the Dawn, is a well-known landmark and the quintessential image of Bangkok. Its single elongated prang (Khmer-style tower) is surrounded by four smaller prangs. The Tourism Authority of Thailand says the main prang is 104 meters high, while other sources say it's 80-85 metters high. Its porcelain sides had once been used as ballast by boats coming to Bangkok from China, a hallmark of the reign of King Rama III.

Vipassana Meditation Center

Located in Section 5 of Wat Mahathat. Sitting and walking meditation practice is available in english. Participants can stay within the meditation building (donations are always welcome) as long as they wear white clothes (available at the center) and observe the eight man Buddhist precepts, Some of the precepts are abstention from food after midday and from alcohol, tobacco, drugs and sex at all times. Instruction and talks on metditation and Buddhism are held here every evening from 8-10pm. The International Buddhis Meditation Center (Room 105 or 209) in the temple's Mahachulalongkorn University building also gives talks on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month from 3-5pm.

Main info center for english-speaking retreats in Thailand. Holds Buddhist discussion and meditation sessions on the first Sunday of every month.
