There are lots of ways to think of a bagel. There's the rewarding post-run bagel, the lazy-Sunday-morning-reading-the-paper bagel, the hurried running-to-work bagel. For Gregor Gerlach and Christian Kiefer, there was the inspirational why-don't-we-do-this-in-Germany bagel.

The story goes that Gerlach and Kiefer were pontificating on the joys of bagels one summer day in Chicago in 1995 and wondering why such a delicacy didn't exist back in their home country. They left their consultant jobs behind and began hands-on bagel-making training in New York, New Jersey and Chicago. A year later, with dough machines brought in from the U.S., the team opened their first Bagel Brothers shop in the town of Leipzig. The franchise now has 14 shops around Germany, including one in Munich's Maxvorstadt neighborhood.

The shop serves up a wide variety of bagels including onion, parmesan-oregano, tomato, pumpkin seed and blueberry. Although the cream cheese serving falls short of the American super-sized dollop (read: here they give you a normal portion of cream cheese), the sandwiches are hearty enough. Try the chicken fajita, caprese or parme sano sandwiches.
