Located off the shore of Bluff Beach are breaks that offer, from November to April, some of the gnarliest, board-snapping waves found off either coast of Panama.
The spot breaks like Hawaii, with big barrels that provide some of the best bodyboarding opportunities on the Isthmus. At least, that’s the story countless 'boarders have given this writer during 10 years of reporting on Panama. Rights and lefts roll up over a sand bar, barrel fast and generate short but exhilerating rides.
On good days, Bluff is on par with Santa Catalina on Panama’s Pacific coast, but whereas Catalina breaks over coral and jagged rocks, there’s nothing but sand under Bluff Breaks. That said, this ride’s for advanced wave riders or death-wishy beginners only.
Like Playa Wizard, Bluff kicks up peak after glorious peak, rights as well as lefts, and there's nothing but sand under them—there's not a rock in sight. But also like Wizard, there's a dangerous rip current to be aware of.
The most common ways to get to Bluff if you're hauling a board is by truck or by boat. Most people take a pick-up truck taxi there, which will set you back $20 or more due to the last few miles of a generally smooth trip being on a horribly pot-holed road. Be sure to agree on a price before getting in the taxi to avoid a nasty surprise.
